Oktavi Allison was born in 1951, in Queens, New York. She was raised in the suburbs of Long Island. Oktavi attended school at SUNY, Farmingdale and later migrated to Los Angeles, California. For Oktavi, writing began in earnest in the mid 90’s as a poet, attending workshops and making the rounds on the local poetry circuit in the beach cities. When she moved to North Carolina in 1995, she began her association with the Carolina African-American Writer’s Collective which allowed her opportunities to perform and publish. Subsequently, when she returned to Los Angeles her writing continued and she has flourished. She conducted journal seminars in her community and was a 2015 PEN Center USA Emerging Voices Fellow. Oktavi currently resides in Louisville, Kentucky. She provides infant care as she volunteers with Friendship International which provides life skills for international women. She also intertwines poetry skills into a women’s support group at her local church. When the ink is too stubborn to flow across white space, Oktavi finds herself an angel maker, quilter, and, knitter.
I wish I could claim that I had a traditional prayer closet. Most often it is my favorite taupe chair that allows me to watch the seasons change as I do. My prayer closet travels with me and words are copied from the wallpaper that Jesus hands in my mind. There are also the piles of notes from Holy Spirit scribble written in pews.
These poems span almost three decades of my life. The words speak to my restoration and salvation journey as I walk and pray to the Lord. They are written for the people who have loved me best and have left the greatest imprint on my life. Therefore, I was moved to write poetry that would leave an imprint and bless their souls.
I would love to hear from my readers. Check back for events and book signings in your local area.
